Food Security and Livelihoods

Livelihoods and food security are critical components of sustainable development, and STS is committed to improving them. Our organization believes that individuals and communities should have access to basic needs such as food, water, and shelter, and we work to empower them to achieve sustainable livelihoods and food security.

We seek to empower vulnerable communities and promote their resilience in the face of challenges, including conflict, poverty, and natural disasters. Our food security and livelihoods interventions are designed to address the root causes of poverty and vulnerability and to promote sustainable development. Our organization believes that individuals and communities should have access to basic needs such as food, water, and shelter, and we work to empower them to achieve sustainable livelihoods and food security.
We promote sustainable agriculture practices, provide training in agribusiness and entrepreneurship, and support small-scale farmers to improve their yields and incomes. We also work to strengthen market linkages and provide access to credit and financial services, enabling communities to create sustainable livelihoods. In addition, we recognize the importance of nutrition and the role it plays in promoting healthy and productive communities. We provide education and training on nutrition and health, as well as access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

Additionally, STS promotes increase in productivity of livestock and improvement of the livelihoods of livestock herders in Somalia in order to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities to the effects of climate change. STS believes that by improving the health and productivity of livestock, promoting access to markets and value chains, strengthening resilience to climate change, and building the capacity of local communities and institutions, the livelihoods of livestock herders will be improved. This, in turn, will contribute to poverty reduction, food security, and sustainable natural resource management in the target areas. STS monitors and evaluates its progress towards these outcomes using indicators such as increased livestock productivity, improved market access, and enhanced resilience to climate change.
Through these efforts, we aim to create resilient communities that can withstand shocks and stresses, such as climate change, conflict, and economic downturns. Our approach is participatory, community-driven, and sustainable, ensuring that the impact of our work is lasting and transformative. In this area, we focus on supporting vulnerable communities to increase their food production and income through the provision of agricultural inputs, training, and access to markets. The aim is to improve the resilience of households and reduce the risk of food insecurity.

Through our agriculture and livelihoods interventions, we aim to increase access to food, improve nutrition, and increase the income of vulnerable communities.
Our interventions include providing seed and fertilizer, supporting small-scale irrigation schemes, training farmers on improved farming techniques, promoting crop diversification, and establishing community seed banks. We also work to increase access to markets and support the establishment of savings and loan groups to provide financial support to farmers. STS – Serving Together for Social Development also recognizes the importance of empowering youth and women with skills training to improve their livelihoods and reduce poverty. By establishing vocational training centers and providing support for employment opportunities, STS aims to help young people and women gain the necessary skills to access better job opportunities or become self-employed. To ensure the sustainability of vocational training centers, STS puts in place mechanisms that can generate income to support their operations. The organization also fosters collaboration and cross-learning among different skills/vocational training centers to share experiences and best practices.

STS also works to combat exploitative practices such as child labor, human trafficking, and conflict through programs that provide literacy and job skills training to vulnerable communities. Additionally, STS supports alternative and transitional education programs that address illiteracy and numeracy through accelerated learning principles and practical job skills, leadership, and life skills curricula. These programs assist students in transitioning to more formal learning opportunities or gainful employment. To ensure trainees have continued support while adapting to a new work or educational environment, STS develops customized internship and mentoring programs. These programs help trainees apply their newly acquired skills in a practical work setting and receive guidance and support as they adjust to new roles and responsibilities.
Through our livelihood’s interventions, we aim to increase the income of vulnerable communities by providing skills training, establishing income-generating activities, and supporting the development of micro-enterprises. We also provide support to vulnerable households through social protection initiatives, including cash transfers and food assistance.
