STS International Solidarity’s mission is to work together with communities for stability awareness, socio-economic development to the target societies through strengthening their capacity and implementation of humanitarian programs, including protection interventions to reach prosperity with a stable and conducive environment for all.
STS International Provides Relief, Rehabilitation, Livelihood, Emergency Response, Wash, Education, GBV sessions, PSS, Protection for Women and Children, and Reconstruction support to communities affected by conflict and natural disasters in Somalia. Supports conflict-affected populations by strengthening the capacities of communities, civil society, and government authorities, increasing their preparedness to protect human rights through advocacy, providing basic services, and promoting the well-being of the individual and the family, and guarantee Women and children’s rights in the community. STS contributes in all available means to eliminate violence against women and children physically and psychologically.
Contract: 1 year based on funding and performance reviews.

Position: Gender and Protection Officer.
Location: Mogadishu.
Working Area: Office with occasional field visits.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the STS Programs Coordinator and Operations Director, she/he will be responsible for the development of community protection and gender mainstreaming practices, programs, and activities in all programs focusing on economic empowerment, social and gender equity as well as community protection. The post of gender and protection officer is key to achieving its long-term goal of empowering disadvantaged and vulnerable women and girls to exercise economic, social, civil, and cultural rights, as well as the goal of addressing and mitigating key protection concerns in Somalia
Technical support to the project team
- Provide advice and support to the Project Managers to ensure that all project activities have been designed with gender-sensitive and protection-integrated approaches, with the needs of women, girls, boys, and men having been considered and included in the design.
- Provide advice and ongoing support to project staff on gender and protection related issues during project
- Support the program team on establishing a gender-sensitive accountability mechanism for beneficiaries
- Collaborate with program managers on integrating the GBV in the program implementation.
- Take a lead role in raising awareness about the organization’s PSEA policies and procedures (as above) and provide advice to staff, workers, and other representatives of IYD on these matters, ensuring that staff understands their obligation to report a breach of policy.
- Raise awareness on reporting procedures and occasionally receive reports on PSEA, responding per the organization’s policies and procedures, providing referral, or next steps advice and support.
- Make sure all reports are reported to the CD and any other duties as requested by the supervisor.
Monitoring and reporting on gender issues
- Ensure close interaction with the M&E team
- Prepare tools and set up a system allowing regular monitoring and reporting on the project related to gender issues
- Assist in data collection, compiling lessons learned, establishing indicators to support knowledge sharing
Networking and Coordination
- Build up a collaborative network of peers, government agencies, protection clusters, and local NGOs engaged in issues related to gender/protection and coordinate and collaborate on research, programming, and advocacy.
- Represent STS in relevant external fora, clusters media, and with other external stakeholders on protection and gender issues
- Represent STS in working group meetings
- Set up a basic referral mechanism
- Knowledge management and knowledge sharing
- Update internal documents regarding gender and protection and share those with the team.
- Prepare training materials and provide training for project staff on gender and protection mainstreaming
- Provide brief updates on the development of gender-related issues and new approaches to project staff
- Participate in gender-related community of practice in the region.
- Support project research, evaluations, and baseline studies on gender/women’s empowerment with technical advice and guidance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in a relevant area (e.g., social sciences, sociology, anthropology, psychology, or politics) with 3 years of experience in Somalia or a similar context. A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
- Strong written and oral communication skills and fluency in English. Knowledge of Somali (Both spoken and written is desirable)
Abilities:
- Sharp time management skills.
- Strong ethics, with an ability to manage confidential data.
- The ability to work in a systematic and organized manner.
- The ability to use Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint in a professional way.
- Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Good organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills.
- Develops and encourages new and innovative solutions.
Experiences:
- 2 years of experience in gender programming, including significant experience on GBV, women’s voice, and/or economic empowerment
- Strong understanding of political and legal systems in Somalia as related to women’s rights as well as demonstrated experience in working in/collaborating with civil society
- Proven skills in partnership building, influencing, and negotiation with a range of actors.
- A minimum of three years of experience working with NGOs or INGOs in a similar sector.
- At least 3 years of experience in protection programs.
- Experience in GBV case management is required.
Physical and personality traits required:
- Flexible and able to work well under pressure and comply with donors & partnership deadlines is essential.
- Good communication and management skills in different levels of communications, and must be approachable, good listener, easy to talk.
